You better start reading wiki then:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Monk

Summary:
Divine Favor (Primary)
This attribute provides a healing bonus to all Monk spells that target allies, and increases the duration and effectiveness of spells that help you call forth divine powers to aid your allies.

Healing Prayers
Points allocated to Healing Prayers increase the duration and effectiveness of spells that allow you to heal yourself and your allies.

Smiting Prayers
Smiting Prayers increase the duration and effectiveness of skills that inflict damage on the enemy. Smiting Prayers are especially effective against the undead.

Protection Prayers
Allocate points to Protection Prayers to increase the duration and effect of your Protection spells, which help protect you and your allies from harm.

---

But tbh nobody can make this kind of decissions for you... you should play what you like best.

I play with heroes (and in the past with henchmen too) for 99% of the time. When i made my monk i started as healer (healing prayers and divine favor) but i found out soon that it wasnt a role that suited me well (my heroes were much better at it), so i switched to Mo/Rt and became a Smiter with some spirits (because i only like a few smiting skills). That worked out fine for me (been able to do all missions, quests, etc).

Ofcourse there are situations where playing with heroes is (too) hard: urgoz, the deep, etc. So here you have to play with other players and you often get a certain role that needs a certain build. It helps when you know how to use those builds.

First of all, don't be too overly concerned about it. It's not like some other games where you need to "re-spec" if you want to change your build. In GW you can change your attribute points freely, whenever your in a town/outpost. Your attribute point setup is also saved along with your skill setup, when you save/load a Template.

Basically, your point setup will depend upon your build, and you can feel free to experiment. But generally, you put the points into the attribute lines your skills use.

If you are wanting to do a "healer" build, you would put points into Healing Prayers/Protection Prayers and Divine Favor. The overall balance would depend upon whether you are leaning toward direct healing or more protection, or a balance between the two. For a healer, you'll always want a good amount of Divine Favor as it boosts all healing.

If you wanted to go to a Smiting build, you mostly just need points in Smiting prayers.

If you are playing the game solo (with Henchmen/heroes) I would suggest that you work on a Smiting build and leave the healing to the Henchmen. That allows you to 'direct' the team better.

In any case, you can switch between builds easily by using Templates.

I never got on with support characters - watching red bars is just not my thing. I've found that the only role that interests me is that of damage dealer, so that's what I do with every class.

Smiting monks are fun, 55 monks even more so, if you can find an area where they're still viable

Decide on your own! :] Pick skills you like, look at their attributes, put points into said attributes.
